The project includes a new Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and High Dependency Unit, along with the extension and refurbishment of the Main Entrance and Maternity Emergency Unit at the University Maternity Hospital, Limerick. (UMHL).  A two-storey building with a rooftop plant room over 1000 msq in area will provide modern, purpose-designed clinical accommodation focused on patient dignity, privacy, enhanced observation, and efficient care delivery. It includes for the upgrade and landscaping of the Main Hospital entrance forecourt including a new Ambulance/entrance canopy with enhanced traffic and dedicated pedestrian access routes, along with a new staff car park accessed from the eastern hospital entrance.

In order to minimise disruption to the hospital, the project will be realised in a series of Phases to allow it to remain fully operational throughout. The new extension utilises rapid build technology and off-site construction methods, to reduce the overall construction period and to facilitate the highest quality design standard and to assist in the efficient delivery of the project.

The exterior design of the building utilises rapid-build technology in the form of light-gauge steel systems and responds to the original hospital building through its use of modular red brick panels, introducing a contemporary architectural expression that reflects the continued evolution of the campus.

The project has full planning permission and is expected to be on site in 2026.
